Waverley Park was a giant concrete beast in Melbourne's south east. A ground purpose built for football, it was part of footy's grand vision to cement (no pun intended) its future and free itself from the financial binds of the MCG. Located on the dairy pastures of Mulgrave, Waverly was projected to become Melbourne's demographic dead centre. 200 acres of grazing and market garden land was purchased with the dream of building a 157,000 seat mega stadium! For much of its early life though, Waverley Park was little more than a sunken concrete bowl. Eventually stands ascended, and Waverley grew to a capacity of 72,000. But Waverley Park's stuttering growth was handicapped by the failure to extend rail to the venue and a Government decree that locked the Grand Final away at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Waverley Park became maligned for its 'Arctic Park' rain band, its inhumanly large carpark and the nightmare traffic chaos that would clog the South-Eastern freeway. Footy's moved on to greener pastures, but the vast expanses of Waverley Park will always be synonymous with the game's golden era of open, free-slowing footy. Waverley's floodlights also brought night footy to the masses and allowed World Series Cricket to pioneer the day-nighter. Please note that we are 100% independent and our hand drawn retro shirts are made by local artists right here in Melbourne.
